There are two medical degrees in the U.S. that enable you to obtain the legal right to practice unrestricted medicine - the M.D. (Medical Doctor or Doctor of Medicine) and the D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine).

Examples of other medical degrees with a restricted legal right to practice medicine are Podiatrist (D.P.M. - Doctor of Podiatric Medicine), Dentist (D.M.D. - Doctor of Dental Medicine), and Optometrist (O.D. - Doctor of Optometry).

Whether you attend a School of Medicine or an Osteopathic Medical School, you will obtain the education and legal right to practice any speciality.

To further help you on your journey to medical school, I have created list of M.D., D.O. and D.P.M. programs for your reference. This list is accurate as of July 2010. These programs are listed alphabetically and reflect what I have learned over the past 8 years.

Some programs provide for entry from high school, some are for entry from college, and many have specific limitations like state residency.  If you are firm on pursuing a career in the field of medicine, you might want to pursue one of these programs.
